Behind The Music with Irish Singer Songwriter Justin J Grant

Behind the music Justin J Grant - Jacqueline JaxJustin J Grant is a singer/multi-instrumentalist from Newry, N.Ireland. He has been performing in public from the age of fifteen, formerly as the front man of a locally acclaimed six piece band and currently as a solo artist playing all over Ireland and the U.K. Justin is a prolific writer and has an extensive Catalogue of wonderful melody driven contemporary songs of which fourteen are presented on his debut album, “  Break The Wing  “

JAX: Where were you born and where have you been living for the past 10 years.
JUSTIN: I was born in Newry Co Down N. Ireland,  I got interested in music from an early age.  And then people told me I could sing I just thought I was making a funny noise,  So I ended up playing guitar and singing in bands.  In 2001 I had ideas about songs of my own so I bought a cheap ticket & headed for the bright lights of Belfast City.  And I am very grateful I have had the chance to enlighten a few peoples ear holes along the way with my music.

JAX: Why do you create music and what do you most love about it?
JUSTIN: Well I had nothing else to do,  I started out as a guitar player back then I had to sing well because nobody else wanted to sing my songs, And I had a natural talent for the guitar because my father was a musician he tought me how to play and I really liked the idea about that. My passion for song blossomed on the back of a love for an eclectic range of stars like The Mamas and Papas,  The Beatles, David Bowie, Tim Hardin, Glen Campbell, Hendrix, Cream, And I used to watch people playing on stage and thought wow hey one day that could be me and now it appears to be that way,  Weather people like it or not is neither here nor there.  So I just started writing more songs working with my then producer/ manager Andy Cowan Martin where we shuffled songs about,  From some scratchy beginnings we have ended up with what I think is a really great album of which I am very proud.

JAX: Do you play gigs, tour or primarily share your music online? And are there any challenges to what your doing?
JUSTIN: Last year I played live across Ireland and England and we have picked up radio play in Japan, Nashville, Spain, Holland, UK Ireland and number 10 in the UK Country charts. At the moment I am working on new material writing recording demos that sort of thing,   All I can do is put my music out there and hope people like it,  And if they don’t well I can always do a runner Hee Hee. Well the internet is taking over in a big so I am afraid to say I will have to let peter the carrier pigeon go,…But for the time being if any one wants to get a hold of my music then go to I tunes/ Amazon & just squirt Justin J Grant “Break the Wing”  into the web & I shall pop up.

JAX: Name 3 words that best describe you and tell me why.
JUSTIN: Happy Hoppy Floppy   Well because I am a happy kinda guy,  Hoppy because I cant sit down always on the go go me & floppy because I have long-lasting floppy disk hair.

JAX:  What’s the music scene like where you are? Best places to go to hear music?
JUSTIN: Ireland has always had a great music scene,  My best venues for original music would have to be the Spirit Store in Dundalk, Amplified Bar in Newry & The Black Box Belfast.

JAX: Tell me about your best music moment.
JUSTIN: My best music moment would have to be back in 2008 watching Glen Campbell perform  Wichita Lineman Live at the waterfront hall in Belfast,  tugs at my heart and soul every time.

Hey I have had a few great moments in my life and this is one of them,  Thanks for having me. I am humbled XO

Up Close and Personal with Ed Concepcion

Jacqueline:: What are three things that would surprise us to know about you?
  1.  I originally moved to South Florida to be an airplane mechanic but quit school to play music.
  2. I used to be a worship leader for a program in the Salvation Army and turned worship into metal.
  3. I didn’t start singing until I moved to Florida at 25 years old.
Jacqueline:: How do you feel about the music business today?
Ed:: I feel it is in much need of passion. The music industry has become dulled down and bubble gum. It needs the passionate artists that wrote epic songs that live on forever! Who will write the songs that will be charting 20 years later?
Jacqueline:: Name three words that best describe you and why?
Ed:: High-energy,crazy,passionate. High energy because I am at 100 miles an hour as soon as I wake until I sleep. People half my age can’t keep up with me. Crazy because I will say almost anything at anytime to crack someone up and put a smile on their face. Passionate because of the feeling I put into EVERYTHING I do. If it’s not worth putting my whole heart into it, I won’t attempt it at all.
Jacqueline:: Who was the single most influential person in your music journey so far?
Ed:: My mother for starting it.
Jacqueline:: What has been the most successful thing you have done to publicize your music thus far?
Ed:: Hands down, it would have to be Reverbnation along with facebook and youtube. All 3 cross promote very well.

Personal note from Artist:

It all started for me when I was 14 and I asked my dad for a saxophone. Now there is a sexy instrument. My dad was too cheap so he bought me a clarinet. Nothing sexy about that! Me? On a woodwind? Never!  So I did what any manipulative 14 year old boy with divorced parents would do. I asked my mom for a guitar and this started a life-long passion for writing and playing music. I was always into the heavier side of everything listening to bands like Iron Maiden, Slayer, Anthrax, and OverKill. My admiration for bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd came much later in life. I grew up on the Jersey shore playing in various projects as a rhythm guitarist. I moved to South Florida in 1993 and met guitarist Eric Wright. That’s when things started really taking off and I realized my potential as a lead singer and song writer. Eric had a lot of music written and needed lyrics and vocal melodies. They flowed out of me like wine and Shattered Reality was formed. The first time we hit the stage was 1 year later at a battle of the bands at the Plus Five in Fort Lauderdale. We chose to go all original. We slaughtered the competition! When we got off stage, strangers asked us to sign their tickets because they thought we were going to be famous quickly. Sadly that was not the case. We dominated the local metal scene and broke up 2 years later. I played in various projects over the next 3 years writing music the whole time but never sharing it with the bands I was in because there was nothing serious. Then I met guitarist Steve Mirable who had amazing abilities but could not write. With my song writing and his shredding we formed Warfare but when auditioning bass players, we could not find a committed one. So, after much frustration, I became a bass player. Then we found Roman Vohsalik, who was exactly the drummer we were looking for, and we were now Warfare the power trio, sounding like a cross between Iron Maiden, Metalica, Rush, and Kiss. Once again, we hit the stage a year later with all originals, and blew the crowd away with our originality, stage presence, and tightness. I believe that music should be done right. A true depiction of the artist/songwriter’s heart conveyed through the instruments of others. That’s why I took a year from the formation to the unveiling of each serious project, especially when I’m writing the music. Warfare recorded a 9 song LP in 2001 and broke up at the end of 2002. I continued to play the local South Florida scene in various bands and projects until 2009 when I decided to go completely solo due to lack of dedication of others and the heartbreak associated with the breakup of a band. I concentrated my solo career in Broward County playing places like, Kahunas, American Rock, Cheers,  Crabby Jack’s, and numerous gigs in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami/Dade area. I moved from Deerfield Beach to Delray Beach in 2012 were I continue to write and play cutting edge, original music.

Regards, Ed Concepcion

Personal Interview:
Jacqueline Jax: What are three things that would surprise us to know about you?
Monte Rosa: I enjoy learning new things about life, my career, and anything that surrounds me.
I really get a kick out of doing things without planning them too much. Last minute plans I think are sometimes what keeps things in a bright spark. My family is always very important, no matter what success I achieve, I always look back at my roots for more inspirations and to keep my self grounded.

Jacqueline Jax: How do you feel about the music business today?
Monte Rosa: The Music business is good today if you work hard and push your craft to the best of your abilities. I can have many personal opinions on this topic, but really it won’t be a fare thing to say my opinions, when facts are what really show how this “business” is and will be as long as all people involved in it don’t get more involved in owning it’s development at every level of professionalism within it.

Jacqueline Jax: Who was the single most influential person in your music journey so far?
Monte Rosa: Impossible and unfair to give credit to just “one person”. Too many to name them here. I can easily say that everyone that I’ve come to play music with from the first day I picked up a guitar, and even before I became a songwriter, has something to do with me still doing music today. No exaggeration.

Artists Bio::
In today’s ultra competitive and saturated music industry, few artists have come along that make a name for themselves the old fashioned way … through great music, killer live shows and one-on-one contact with fans. From the very beginning, Monte*Rosa’s unique style of music, stage antics and hard work have created a steady and loud buzz within the music scene; earning the title as “BEST IN THE USA – by BOOM Magazine” on their annual “Best of… Issue” (January 2006). The honor is well deserved. In just a few months since its release, Monte*Rosa’s first single – Me La Robo – was #1 in Puerto Rico’s leading rock station; earned a steady presence in Sirius Satellite Radio’s Universo Latino’s Alternativa Ñ Show and was a Buzzworthy video in MTV Español.

The second single – Mi Cielo Perdió un Angel, based on Monte*Rosa’s own experiences dealing with the ending of a five year marriage – has earned more praise and even brought more attention to this artist’s amazing songwriting skills. Amongst peers, he is respected. This respect has earned the opportunity to share the stage with the likes of Bacilos, Los Amigos Invisibles, Black Guayaba, Rabanes and Caramelos de Cianuro, just to name a few. After the release of Monte*Rosa, Yahoo!Música highlighted him as one of the best to come out of Miami in the past few years.

On tour, Monte*Rosa visited Orlando, New York, New Jersey, Washington DC and finally, Puerto Rico. Highlights? Playing the famous Hard Rock Café in San Juan and doing everything rock n’ roll style… no glitz or glamour, just the heart and desire to share the music. In the past 18 months Monte*Rosa continued performing throughout the USA and visited his native Colombia on various occasions, the time became one of reflection and the birth of a long anticipated follow up.

Conquering obstacles and barriers behest on today’s independent artist, Monte*Rosa celebrates the birth of his second full length production “12 Historias en 3 Tonos” (“12 Stories in 3 Shades”) released October 23rd exclusively in digital format. “12 Historias en 3 Tonos” is loaded with personal and social lyrics accompanied by new musical elements and sounds that conquers the hearts of every existing Monte*Rosa admirer and of music lovers in general.
