Behind the Music : Singer Songwriter Héllena

20140330-170201.jpg

Born and raised in a small village in Greece, Héllena always felt the need to move to a big city and chase her musical dreams, which she did in 2005 by relocating to Athens where she took Piano and Modern singing lessons. In 2009 she started writing her own material. Héllena recorded her self titled EP in 2010 at Artemis studios. In late 2011 she decided to take a leap of faith and moved to the UK to work on her debut album with the MTV award winning Producer Stereo Mike. The first single borne out of the collaboration was “Don’t Change”. This set the scene for what’s about to come. Living in London for only a short time, Héllena made it into the top 20 on MTV Unsigned, gaining 3 Gold awards on BEAT100 for her song “Don’t Change”. Héllena had the privilege in March 2013 of performing alongside Stereo Mike at SXSW festival. Early 2014 saw Héllena reach the heights of no2 in the ReverbNation’s Soul/R’N’B charts for London. Héllena is now fast establishing a strong online fanbase as well as performing with her new band at live gigs. May 2014 sees the new single “Dream Big” from her forthcoming album “Body and Soul” being released. This Singer/Songwriter is being tipped for future success and keep your eyes peeled to this talented diverse artist. Héllena has come to the attention of the BBC with an appearance on BBC London 94,9 fm Simon Lederman show in early April 2014. –

AVA Live Radio Interview HellenaINTERVIEW:
Jax: You’ve had a recent name change from Helena Micy to Hellena. What promoted you to change your name?
Hellena: I changed my name for many different reasons but the most important ones are that most of the people were pronouncing “Micy” the wrong way and that now my name is more Hellenic…Greek

Jax: How are you adjusting your name change on social media, your web site and across all your previous advertising?
Hellena: It takes hard work to change your social networks and everything. For example I had to create a whole new Page on Facebook and lost the 2200 fans I managed to gather there in 2 years…so it’s not that fun..but it had to be done.

Jax: Do you feel that this will confuse your current fans?
Hellena: People need time to adjust to the new name now…but it’s not totally different from the one I had before so I guess everything will be as it’s supposed to be in few weeks time.

Jax: How do you feel that this change will benefit your career?
Hellena: I feel that I will benefit from the name change in the long run. It’s memorable, easy to pronounce, unique and it’s 100% me. It feels right…and when something feels right, I go with my guts.

JAX: What have you always wanted to do if your ever given the chance?
Hellena: Singing… and thankfully I’ve been given this chance already. 🙂

Jax: Would you consider yourself a spiritual person?
Hellena: I believe we’re all the same and that we should treat each other equally. I also try to surrender to the unknown…so hopefully I am a spiritual person.

Jax: Tell me a story about your song. Why you wrote it. Explain the meaning. What does it mean to you? Is it about someone?
Hellena: I think that nobody can find contentment and live a happy life without Dreaming. I love merging real life with imagination. It’s in my DNA. I am personally convinced that imagination and real life are somehow connected. Your thoughts become your reality.
I wrote “Dream Big” during a very difficult period in my life. I wasn’t able to dream at all during this time and I needed something to keep me going and keep me alive. My lyrics for “Dream Big” certainly did. They somehow saved me.

JAX: Do you believe that our journeys are routed by fate or are we predestined to live eternally by reincarnation learning as we move thru time and meeting up with the same souls continuously?
Hellena: I really don’t know. I just try to enjoy life as much as possible and go after my dreams. I really don’t think about next or past lives. I am more concerned about the “NOW”.

JAX: Have you every heard of the power of positive attraction? It is where we attract what ever we think of. If we want success, then we only think of only success. If we think of what we don’t want to happen, we can attract that too. What do you think about the concept? Have you used it in your journey? If so how and did it work?
Hellena: Yes I totally believe that. I’ve seen it happening countless times in my life so I try to think positive as much as possible and go with the flow which is not easy by the way since I am a control freak… hehehe

JAX: I know what you mean about losing inspiration for dreaming. I am a big dreamer, it let’s me create the world I share with others. Things can take my inspiration like people, sadness, exhaustion, burn out….. What happened to cause your block?
Hellena: Many things happened back then which I don’t want to remember since I am in a really good page of my life at the moment, but these things that happened to me…made me stronger and better..helped me evolve as an artist and as a human being too so I am thankful they happened to me in the end. 🙂

Jax: I was just recently answering an email to a reader who is feeling depressed and in a rut. She has lost her inspiration and her days have become a routine. Can you offer any ideas or advise for her?
Hellena: Sometimes when you’re depressed you cannot push things because they will only get worse. I think acceptance of the situation and belief that things will get better as they always do is the best option but I am not maybe the right person to ask. Hehe

Behind The Music with Irish Singer Songwriter Justin J Grant

Behind the music Justin J Grant - Jacqueline JaxJustin J Grant is a singer/multi-instrumentalist from Newry, N.Ireland. He has been performing in public from the age of fifteen, formerly as the front man of a locally acclaimed six piece band and currently as a solo artist playing all over Ireland and the U.K. Justin is a prolific writer and has an extensive Catalogue of wonderful melody driven contemporary songs of which fourteen are presented on his debut album, “  Break The Wing  “

INTERVIEW

JAX: Where were you born and where have you been living for the past 10 years.
JUSTIN: I was born in Newry Co Down N. Ireland,  I got interested in music from an early age.  And then people told me I could sing I just thought I was making a funny noise,  So I ended up playing guitar and singing in bands.  In 2001 I had ideas about songs of my own so I bought a cheap ticket & headed for the bright lights of Belfast City.  And I am very grateful I have had the chance to enlighten a few peoples ear holes along the way with my music.

JAX: Why do you create music and what do you most love about it?
JUSTIN: Well I had nothing else to do,  I started out as a guitar player back then I had to sing well because nobody else wanted to sing my songs, And I had a natural talent for the guitar because my father was a musician he tought me how to play and I really liked the idea about that. My passion for song blossomed on the back of a love for an eclectic range of stars like The Mamas and Papas,  The Beatles, David Bowie, Tim Hardin, Glen Campbell, Hendrix, Cream, And I used to watch people playing on stage and thought wow hey one day that could be me and now it appears to be that way,  Weather people like it or not is neither here nor there.  So I just started writing more songs working with my then producer/ manager Andy Cowan Martin where we shuffled songs about,  From some scratchy beginnings we have ended up with what I think is a really great album of which I am very proud.

JAX: Do you play gigs, tour or primarily share your music online? And are there any challenges to what your doing?
JUSTIN: Last year I played live across Ireland and England and we have picked up radio play in Japan, Nashville, Spain, Holland, UK Ireland and number 10 in the UK Country charts. At the moment I am working on new material writing recording demos that sort of thing,   All I can do is put my music out there and hope people like it,  And if they don’t well I can always do a runner Hee Hee. Well the internet is taking over in a big so I am afraid to say I will have to let peter the carrier pigeon go,…But for the time being if any one wants to get a hold of my music then go to I tunes/ Amazon & just squirt Justin J Grant “Break the Wing”  into the web & I shall pop up.

JAX: Name 3 words that best describe you and tell me why.
JUSTIN: Happy Hoppy Floppy   Well because I am a happy kinda guy,  Hoppy because I cant sit down always on the go go me & floppy because I have long-lasting floppy disk hair.

JAX:  What’s the music scene like where you are? Best places to go to hear music?
JUSTIN: Ireland has always had a great music scene,  My best venues for original music would have to be the Spirit Store in Dundalk, Amplified Bar in Newry & The Black Box Belfast.

JAX: Tell me about your best music moment.
JUSTIN: My best music moment would have to be back in 2008 watching Glen Campbell perform  Wichita Lineman Live at the waterfront hall in Belfast,  tugs at my heart and soul every time.

Hey I have had a few great moments in my life and this is one of them,  Thanks for having me. I am humbled XO

Up Close and Personal with Ed Concepcion

Jacqueline:: What are three things that would surprise us to know about you?
Ed::
  1.  I originally moved to South Florida to be an airplane mechanic but quit school to play music.
  2. I used to be a worship leader for a program in the Salvation Army and turned worship into metal.
  3. I didn’t start singing until I moved to Florida at 25 years old.
Jacqueline:: How do you feel about the music business today?
Ed:: I feel it is in much need of passion. The music industry has become dulled down and bubble gum. It needs the passionate artists that wrote epic songs that live on forever! Who will write the songs that will be charting 20 years later?
Jacqueline:: Name three words that best describe you and why?
Ed:: High-energy,crazy,passionate. High energy because I am at 100 miles an hour as soon as I wake until I sleep. People half my age can’t keep up with me. Crazy because I will say almost anything at anytime to crack someone up and put a smile on their face. Passionate because of the feeling I put into EVERYTHING I do. If it’s not worth putting my whole heart into it, I won’t attempt it at all.
Jacqueline:: Who was the single most influential person in your music journey so far?
Ed:: My mother for starting it.
Jacqueline:: What has been the most successful thing you have done to publicize your music thus far?
Ed:: Hands down, it would have to be Reverbnation along with facebook and youtube. All 3 cross promote very well.

Personal note from Artist:

It all started for me when I was 14 and I asked my dad for a saxophone. Now there is a sexy instrument. My dad was too cheap so he bought me a clarinet. Nothing sexy about that! Me? On a woodwind? Never!  So I did what any manipulative 14 year old boy with divorced parents would do. I asked my mom for a guitar and this started a life-long passion for writing and playing music. I was always into the heavier side of everything listening to bands like Iron Maiden, Slayer, Anthrax, and OverKill. My admiration for bands like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd came much later in life. I grew up on the Jersey shore playing in various projects as a rhythm guitarist. I moved to South Florida in 1993 and met guitarist Eric Wright. That’s when things started really taking off and I realized my potential as a lead singer and song writer. Eric had a lot of music written and needed lyrics and vocal melodies. They flowed out of me like wine and Shattered Reality was formed. The first time we hit the stage was 1 year later at a battle of the bands at the Plus Five in Fort Lauderdale. We chose to go all original. We slaughtered the competition! When we got off stage, strangers asked us to sign their tickets because they thought we were going to be famous quickly. Sadly that was not the case. We dominated the local metal scene and broke up 2 years later. I played in various projects over the next 3 years writing music the whole time but never sharing it with the bands I was in because there was nothing serious. Then I met guitarist Steve Mirable who had amazing abilities but could not write. With my song writing and his shredding we formed Warfare but when auditioning bass players, we could not find a committed one. So, after much frustration, I became a bass player. Then we found Roman Vohsalik, who was exactly the drummer we were looking for, and we were now Warfare the power trio, sounding like a cross between Iron Maiden, Metalica, Rush, and Kiss. Once again, we hit the stage a year later with all originals, and blew the crowd away with our originality, stage presence, and tightness. I believe that music should be done right. A true depiction of the artist/songwriter’s heart conveyed through the instruments of others. That’s why I took a year from the formation to the unveiling of each serious project, especially when I’m writing the music. Warfare recorded a 9 song LP in 2001 and broke up at the end of 2002. I continued to play the local South Florida scene in various bands and projects until 2009 when I decided to go completely solo due to lack of dedication of others and the heartbreak associated with the breakup of a band. I concentrated my solo career in Broward County playing places like, Kahunas, American Rock, Cheers,  Crabby Jack’s, and numerous gigs in the Fort Lauderdale/Miami/Dade area. I moved from Deerfield Beach to Delray Beach in 2012 were I continue to write and play cutting edge, original music.

Regards, Ed Concepcion

Music From: Iridesense, Ryan Stone, and Jesse Potter.

Get to know the artist:
Born with a powerhouse voice, Laurie Cairns began singing at eight years of age when she joined the church choir in her hometown of Aurora, Illinois. As she grew older, she became aware of different styles of music.  “The first time I heard Barbara Streisand’s voice, I was in awe. I had never heard anything like that. It was then that I knew that music could touch the soul.”  In high school, Cairns began listening to 60’s rock and 70’s funk, which became part of her own sound. Soon, “The Laurie Cairns Band” was born and performing throughout the Chicagoland area. She later became lead vocalist for groups such as Counterpoint, bliss and Cobalt and performed at many clubs in Chicago including the Cue Club, The Beat Kitchen and Schuba’s. During this time Cairns showcased her versatility through interpretations of Patsy Cline, Melissa Etheridge, No Doubt and Heart and even gave Muddy Waters a run for his money on her rendition of Hoochie Coochie Man.  Motivated by other women performers, Cairns is moved by the pain in Etta James voice, loves the power of Kelly Clarkson’s rock and is inspired by Sheryl Crow’s storytelling.  “I have such an eclectic taste in music, but one constant is my interest in the human experience.”  Now working on a solo career Cairns is recording her own music. She writes about finding love on her terms and accepting change, letting love in and knowing when to let go. Songs such as As I Am and You Don’t Know open her heart up to the audience and leave her vulnerable to scrutiny.  “Everyone has their own heartbreak and their own joy. I feel fortunate that I am able to share mine through my music.”  Cairns would love to one day work with producers such as Glen Ballard and Robert John “Mutt” Lange. “Music for me has always been about following my heart and doing what I love. It is a passion that I will forever pursue.” Cairns manages to say it best with her own lyrics…”Sweet , sweet morning. Morning’s on its way.”

1. Three things that would surprise you about me.
My favorite kind of food is Korean BBQ.. there’s something about the taste that I really enjoy. I’m a big Lost fan and pretty much anything by JJ Abrams. I used to work as a baggage handler at Toronto international Airport and really enjoyed being around planes.

2. I have mixed feelings about the music business.
On one hand I feel like there are so many ways to connect with your fans, produce videos, record and get out there. At the same time I feel that consumers feel overwhelmed and saturated with all the music that is out there that the perceived value of music has dropped. I used to enjoy buying albums and enjoying the entire project as opposed to just buying the songs that you hear on the radio. The good news is that I feel like I am getting closer each day at figuring out how to connect with people and help them experience my music for it’s lyrical content and the stories associated with them.

3. Three words that describe you.
Fun, Bright, and Pumped. Life is too short to take yourself serious and humor is a great way to connect with people. My lyrics and music will also have a bright positive message in it.. it will make you feel better and I hope that I can make people excited about their selves and the relationships around them.

4. Single most influential is a tough one.. but I would have to say it’s Billy Joel. I love his songwriting, energy, and the variety of themes he has written about.

 5. My goals are to continue writing songs that people will use as the soundtrack of there lives. My songs will be heard by a lot more people across the country and the world. Besides currently writing, recording, and touring I also run a music school called the Rock Zone and I help other budding songwriters learn the process of being developing artists. As of July I am relocating to Nashville and I have promised myself to be open to learning new things there.

1) What are three things that would surprise us to know about you?
Luis Alas: I worked for most of my professional career as a law enforcement officer, including as a Federal Air Marshal after 9/11.
2) How do you feel about the music business today?
Luis Alas: I this is a very interesting time for music. Between social media, online radio and download technology, when was it possible for an unsigned artist to get recognized and listened to in Asia, Europe and beyond? Because people no longer have to buy a complete album, now artists need to make every song count. It is exciting time indeed.
3) Name three words that best describe you and why?
Luis Alas: Tenacious: If I believe in something, I will not quit till I get the outcome I want or need. I will work as hard as it takes and do what ever it takes to make it happen.
Passionate: I don’t think anyone in this industry can do what they do without being passionate about music.
Romantic: Though I love funk and soul, I absolutely love romantic music. It is music that allows me to express feelings in the most profound ways.
4) Who was the single most influential person in your music journey so far?
Luis Alas: Wow, this is a tough one. There have been so many that have had a deep impact but I will boil it down to two. My wife and friend Johnny Holliday, both believed in me that I could be a solo artist. To my wife I have always been the greatest sax player, she will listen to Koz or Marienthal and say your style is different than theirs but just as good.
My buddy Johnniw Holliday a fellow musician which I have worked with for over 20 years. After playing for him at the Jazz In The Gardens Festival in Miami, he told me; “I’m sorry, but I won’t be hiring you any more as my sax player.” when I asked why, he replied; “You need to be on stage on your own as a solo artist.. With you I will never play sax on stage cause you out play me. Even as an artist, you out perform me. You need to go solo so hopefully I can open for you some day.” and that is the day I started working on becoming a solo artist.
5) What are your music plans for the future? Where would you like to be in 2 years?
Luis Alas: I hope to have my album out this fall at the latest, and hope that the rest of the album is received like the single. If it is, I hope to tour. Within two years, I hope to have a better organized management team, be touring and working on album #2.

Marketing Tip of the Day: Step Up Your Music Marketing Plan

20130506-175715.jpg

I have some really important news for those of you who are working hard to take your music marketing to the next level. Check it out….

“A recent Nielsen study found that 40 percent of U.S. consumers—those classified as fans—are responsible for 75 percent of music spending. These fans, who spend between $20 billion and $26 billion on music each year, could spend an additional $450 million to $2.6 billion annually if they had the opportunity to snag behind-the-scenes access to the artists along with exclusive content. The study results, presented at this year’s South by Southwest (SXSW) festival in Austin, Texas, showed that the high level of spending from a relatively narrow group of music consumers is dominating the share of overall music spend. These big spenders have indicated that, at large, they’d be willing to pay even more for exclusive extras, like in-studio updates, real-time emails, pre-orders, limited editions, autographed copies, vinyl records and lyric sheets handwritten by the artist.” (Study from www.nielsen.com)

Hummm. So how does this translate? Basically you should be stepping up your product offerings to your fans. Engagement is the goal and experimentation is key. If you want to generate more sales, you need to get creative with your marketing and start offering exclusive items for your most active fans to connect with you on a more personal level. Once your music is finely tuned and pumping out on all cylinders then start offering special exclusive extras to your mailing list and keep track of which offers pan out the best. This will vary depending on your genre and fan base so mix it up until you discover what they like and go forward with those types of products.

Marketing Tip of The Day: Having A Clear Understanding Of Why in Your Call-To-Action

20130329-103340.jpg

Just when you thought you had it all figured out: your web site designed, email signup in place, color images displayed.. Did you take time to stop and think about WHY you want people to signup for your email list?

This may surprise you but many people collect subscribers without really knowing – WHY?? Today I want you to ask yourself 3 important questions.
1) What message am I trying to get across on my web site?
2) What kind of person do I want to attract?
3) WHY do I want to attract people to signup for my email list?

Now that I’ve made you answer these questions, take that information and go back to your web site and social media pages and see if your online presence is designed to do those things. A successful marketing strategy has a clear understanding not only of WHAT they are offering but WHY they want people to signup for it.

What’s your call-to-action? What are you offering people if they signup to follow you? What is your over all goal? Leave me a comment below so I can check out your page…
